Originally opened in Hill City in 1997 by Brian and Janet Boyer, Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company has opened its doors once again, reports the Rapid City Journal. Owner Brian Boyer said that their original venture may have been ahead of their time, but the couple is getting back into the brewing business now that the craft-beer craze has truly arrived in the Black Hills.
Reviving the original name, the Boyers have reopened the Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company in a large, renovated location – 140 Mount Rushmore Road in Custer. The building, formerly a restaurant, provides the Boyers and their employees room for a tasting room and brewery, as well as an outdoor space. Next year, there are plans to add a full restaurant on the second floor, as well as future event space.
Brewers Hanje Ehrlich and Tom Robbins began mixing a variety of beers just before Memorial Day. Together the brewers are working to develop local variations using ingredients like lavender, juniper berries, and spruce, to name a few. The brewery’s 10-barrel, 6-fermenter system skips the kegging process, and beer is served directly from a “brite tank”, which is where the carbonation process happens.
Mt. Rushmore will be scaling back their hours in the fall to open only on afternoons and evenings in September and cutting back to only weekends in October. In November, they plan to begin brewing for distribution to local bars and restaurants.
Though the Boyers’ originally 1997 brewery may have come to the Black Hills twenty years too early, its revival joins a variety of popular local craft-breweries in the area.
