District 31 Re-Elects The Late Chuck Turbiville

Voters in South Dakota’s 31st Legislative District, which includes Spearfish, Lead, Deadwood, and other communities in the Northern Hills, voted on Tuesday to re-elect Republican incumbents Bob Ewing, Timothy Johns, and the late Chuck Turbiville, to the district’s State Senate and two State House seats, respectively. According to the Rapid City Journal, Johns earned 38 percent of the House vote, while Turbiville earned 28 percent.

Turbiville recently passed away in his Deadwood home, but his name remained on the ballot for November 6th. His seat will be filled by appointment by incoming Governor Kristi Noem in January. The legislator also served as Mayor of Deadwood, and that post has been filled in the interim by David Ruth, Jr.

Johns and Turbiville had two Democratic opponents from Spearfish, Naveen Malik and Wyatt Osthus, who received 21 and 14 percent of the votes, respectively. Senator Bob Ewing was elected over Democratic opponent Sherry Bea Smith, earning 65 percent of the votes over Smith’s 35 percent.
