Data Resources

Data helps policymakers and engaged citizens make well-informed decisions for themselves and their communities. The Black Hills Knowledge Network utilizes regional data in order to provide additional background information for community members on pressing local issues. Alongside our sister site, the South Dakota Dashboard, the Black Hills Knowledge Network supports local news and information with up-to-date federal data.

BHKN Data Series

On an on-going basis, the Black Hills Knowledge Network compiles data on a variety of topics to provide additional context to local issues of interest. View our Education and Native Data Series to learn more about each topic with the support of reliable data.

South Dakota Dashboard - A Data Project of the Black Hills Knowledge Network

The South Dakota Dashboard is an online community information service that provides people with reliable, up-to-date, trend data on South Dakota. We help citizens and community leaders access statewide and local data and statistics for decision-making, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life in our communities. The South Dakota Dashboard is a project of the Black Hills Knowledge Network.

Our main geographic focus is the state of South Dakota. We aggregate data at a multitude of levels including metropolitan/micropolitan regions, counties, cities, and American Indian reservations. Our data comes from many federal and state sources and is available in easy-to-use charts, graphs, and maps. We collect and manage this data with help from our partners at Wilder Research and with support from the Bush Foundation. We also collaborate on data projects with various partners including the Data Center at South Dakota State University, Kids Count, South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development and more.

South Dakota City Profiles

The South Dakota Dashboard offers city profiles for South Dakota cities with populations of 1,000 and greater using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Click on the name of a city to see an easy-to-read, one-page statistical profile.

Each profile contains a city's total population, racial breakdown, gender breakdown, poverty rates, disability rates, home ownership rates, housing cost burden data, median income, median age and more.
